Braga is not a destination that announces itself. It is Portugal's third city, its oldest bishopric, and the place where baroque religious architecture reached its most exuberant expression — Bom Jesus do Monte being the most famous example, a hilltop sanctuary above a zigzag staircase that has been climbing the hill since the eighteenth century.
